Psychology Principles for Navigating Mistakes at Work with Benyamin Elias

Psychology-Principles-for-Navigating-Mistakes-at-Work-with-Benyamin-Elias

Tons of crazy stuff happens at early-stage tech companies.

The upside: these organizations have tons of potential growth opportunities. The downside: things are always changing, there’s no proven roadmap to success, and at some point most people end up taking on more responsibility than they can handle and risk burnout.

Early-stage startup life is not an adventure for the faint of heart.

To become a strong leader in the face of challenges and adversity requires more than simply understanding the data.

As Benyamin regularly writes on his Substack, a mastery of the “soft” skills are what actually make people successful.

In our convo, he highlighted the desire to learn, the ability to see past preconceptions in your role, and the power of taking extreme ownership.

He shared advice that I wish someone explained to me sooner. Like how to:

  • Lead your team out of a rut (and grow your influence) by taking responsibility for mistakes, even when they aren’t 100% yours.

  • Push past imposter syndrome by realizing that you’ll never get to the top of the mountain by sitting in the swamp.

  • Manage burnout by asking yourself hard questions that allow you to make decisions with clear eyes.

  • Use your mistakes as proof that you’re hunting out high-value opportunities.

  • Adapt to change by taking the next step, even when you can’t predict the outcome.

  • Get out of your lane to hone your instincts for finding high-value opportunities.
