Jessica honed her communication skills and boosted her self-confidence. (Metaphor Data)

Background:

Jessica Martin was just starting off as Head of Marketing at Metaphor Data when we started working together.

What challenges were you facing when we met?

It was actually before I started, or even accepted the role. I was experiencing major imposter syndrome even considering the role, and wanted a gut-check from a professional stranger.

I felt like, if I were to accept the role, there was no way I'd be able to do it on my own, and wanted to enter the role knowing I had support beyond my own time-strapped network.

I was afraid of everything not execution-related. Reporting to a CEO, board interactions, the word "strategy", the idea of managing, the list goes on.

Did you evaluate other alternatives?

I did not. I didn't even seek out a coach to be honest, I found Andrew while searching for resources for first time Heads of growth. I was looking for guides/cheatsheets/templates etc. I found those on his site, and then saw that he offered coaching.

What did we work on together?

I would say one of the biggest things we worked on were strategy and confidence.

What was the experience like?

If I had to choose a single word to describe my experience with Andrew, it would be "demystification". Andrew helped me realize that I already had what it took to succeed, I just didn't know how to articulate it. He taught me how to meaningfully communicate with other teams, which is 90% of the battle when you're a solo marketer. I immediately started to see differences in how people responded to me.

My favorite part of working with Andrew were those "AHA! moments". The moment I realized that I DO know what a strategy is. I just hadn't called it that, and held the word "strategy" up high as something I was too junior to understand.

It's like professional self-care.

Any major results?

For me, it's my operating system. How and when to communicate. What other people care about, and how to relay that information meaningfully (not just spitting out buzz words that will leave other teams puzzled and frustrated).

Any message to someone on the fence about working with Andrew?

It's so easy to get so bogged down in execution that you dont come up for air. It's critical to take a step back time and again to re-evaluate your goals, how you're coming off to the team, whether or not things are working holistically, etc. Working with Andrew is a gift you can give yourself.
