The Rise of the
Growth Engineer?
What today's growth leaders need to do differently to stay ahead.
Andrew Capland and Daphne Tideman break down the 4 versions the head of growth role is splitting into, why the career ladder is bending into a loop, and which skills are worth going and getting.

“ Do I need to learn to code to keep this job?
A version of this comes up on coaching calls almost every week.
What's going on
The job changed while you were doing it.
You've seen it in the org chart. Director and VP roles with 1 direct report. Or zero. Headcount requests that die before they reach the CEO. Teams of 1 being asked to do what a team of 6 did 2 years ago.
And you've seen it in the job specs. "Growth engineer." "Technical growth lead." "Full-stack growth." The title keeps showing up. The definition changes every time. Daphne pulled apart 20 of these specs, compared them to the same analysis she ran in 2022, and found 4 different jobs hiding under one title.
So the question every growth leader is working through right now: how much of this do I need to take seriously, how much of it is recruiter fashion, and which skills are actually worth going and getting?
Here's our answer. The role is splitting into 4 distinct versions, and we'll help you find which one is yours.
That's what these 60 minutes are for.
Who's running it
Two views of the same shift.
Andrew Capland
Growth coach, Delivering Value
Coaches Directors, VPs, and Heads of Growth at B2B SaaS companies. 100+ leaders, 1,000+ calls, 5 years. Previously Head of Growth at Wistia and Postscript.
He'll cover: what's happening inside real growth teams right now, why the career ladder is bending into a loop, and stories from the leaders he coaches who fit each version of the role. Names changed, details real.
Daphne Tideman
Growth advisor & writer
Growth advisor to subscription apps, 10+ years. Grew Heights from £28K to £343K MRR as Head of Growth. Writes for RevenueCat. 2,600+ founders and growth leaders read her newsletter, Growth Waves.
She'll cover: how the skills ladder is shifting. She pulled apart 20 head of growth job specs and compared them to her 2022 analysis to map which skills matter more now, and which ones you can finally drop.
What we'll cover
60 minutes. No fluff.
We're exploring the shift through 2 lenses. The skills ladder: which capabilities the job asks for now, and which direction each one is moving. And the career loop: why the path is bending from a ladder into a loop, and what that opens up for you.
Then we'll walk both lenses through the 4 versions of the role, each one brought to life with a real story: Daphne's own first growth job, and the leaders Andrew coaches today.
The through-line: the head of growth role is breaking into 4 distinct versions, and your job is to figure out which one you want.
- What's actually changing: smaller teams, broader specs, and the good news hiding inside both
- The 4 skill categories (tactical, management, soft skills, personal attributes), which ones matter more now, and which ones you can finally stop worrying about
- Why the career ladder is bending into a loop: leaders at the top of the skills ladder are going back to IC roles, into high-paying, high-influence jobs that didn't exist a few years ago
- The 4 versions of the role, each introduced through a real person's story: the first-and-only growth hire, the player-coach, the strategist, and the senior IC who completed the loop
- What each one actually does day to day, the challenges they carry, and what gets them excited (that last one is the fit test)
- How technical you actually need to get, and where "useful" ends and "waste of your time" begins
- What to do next based on which version you lean toward
Plus a live Q&A at the end. Bring the question you've been chewing on.
